Blessingway Ceremony
A “Blessingway” is a Navajo ceremony whereby women (family and friends) gather together to honour the mother-to-be. It is usually held 1-3 months before the expected birth. Tara learned about the Blessingway through a dream while pregnant with her daughter. She has since facilitated a number of Blessingway Ceremonies for expectant mothers and their families. For those looking for a more meaningful gathering prior to baby’s arrival then the typical “retail shower”, a Blessingway is a beautiful and moving experience for all involved. From a smudging ceremony and lighting of “labour candles”, to the “Generations Welcome”, and the group’s creation of a birthing bracelet for the mom-of-honour, a Blessingway Ceremony is a special time to share wisdom, laughter, love and food and to be a part of this special time to celebrate the joys of being a woman and a mother.
